(Obligatory disclaimer to all reading: please don’t ever take my words as gospel. This is just how I envision things as I write. If you have an idea you like better/want to do, go for it. I will 100% be excited to see alternate Garbage Court headcanons and fic and art)

Smith & his cars: I love the idea of Smith driving trashy big American muscle cars. It seems like a thing he would enjoy. On the note of changing form - I kind of deal with this in that Smith almost never seems to keep a car. He steals left, right, and center. Or who knows. Maybe he should be working with a chop shop. Actually that’s a great idea.

The issue of trust with him and Trott will have to be explored further. Because in my head, at least for my stories, they’ve been around each other for years. There’s just some lines they’ve never crossed with each other and this is a big one.

Trott in exile from the sea: I have a lot of backstory in my head that Trott left home because he wanted to buck tradition and he couldn’t get ahead in the insular, political world of the selkies under the sea. In my mind, it is a very tradition and ritual bound community. Trott’s a rebellious creature who dreams big, wants a bigger piece of life than he’s given at home. So like many a rebellious child, he’s out the door with middle fingers up and a vow never to go home. Except, he probably did something to get himself banished. Most of the time he leaves that skin around whatever place they’re crashing in (later the condo they acquire with their ill gotten funds). I think sometimes they do go down to the sea, though he will never ever admit to wanting to do that.

Ross the stained glass heart of my AU writing: My sweet, strange gargoyle. He was made to go on that church roof, along with several other gargoyle statues. In my head, he was the only one who came to life so to speak. The others never attained any conscious/sentience/motion. I suspect if something had attacked the church, the magic of the wards that bound the gargoyles to it might have woken them as defenders? But somehow, Ross woke up and spent many centuries slowly coming into himself. I think Ross really would have liked to have had a family up there on that roof.

I don’t think Ross is as self conscious around Smith and Trott as he is around ordinary human beings. Trying to avoid smacking your tail into people is hard in a crowded city! There was a bit, early on, but they sort of achieve this ease with other very quickly. It helps that Smith was rather instantly appreciative of him, I suppose.

Sorry this took me days to reply, I am the worst tumblr user. Also I am really glad you enjoyed the fic!

Regarding the cars, he would definitely be the type to steal them off a whim - and he better be damn good at it. In terms of preference, say, if there were two unattended cars, one being a some Boss 429 or a ‘15 Chevy Tahoe, he’d go for the former if he could only choose one. He may keep an eye on that Tahoe, though. YES to the chop shop (so he would have to be a bit of a gear head). A little bit of an actual job to keep steady money as opposed to something even more dishonest. Of course, imagining where they’re at is a rather large area (I keep envisioning someplace New York-esque just to put some setting in my mind) where money is priority uno and security is difficult to keep all around, it may be relatively easy for him.

To bide some time, I imagine Smith has some old banged up car hanging around in some garage or warehouse near the chop shop that he works on every so often just to keep himself busy. Like if he just wants to get away for bit he’ll go there and tinker.

I also prefer the notion of Trott and Smith going way back - at least further than when they met Ross (it kind of parallels to them in real life). So they have built up this pact of trust just as any long time friends would and when something big and important gets breached - that’s going to be a long transgression to build a bridge over.

A little personal blerb to relate to your ideas on Trott’s past: my dad grew up in a small town where custom and everything was just black and white and no one really thought or did anything different. He was different than the rest of his siblings; he always got in fights, got in trouble at school, disobeyed and was the most absolute stubborn and obstinate boy. Eventually he found an escape by going into the military and blah blah blah we were away from them for years. Now, he talks about how whenever we go up to my grandparents that he feels so isolated because his siblings, and now their children, have grown up in this small town and have this closer rapport with each other than with him. My brother and I notice it, but we’re not as bothered. I hope that little story wasn’t awkward, I thought I would just share the sort of tone of my thoughts on Trott’s past.

I imagine Trott wanted more than what was offered at home. He wanted to get out and escape and see what else was out there because, by God, he’d be damned if he stayed there. It wasn’t the life for him, so he thought he’d pave his own. I feel as though he did want out, but also wanted a way that ensured he wouldn’t have thoughts of returning - ergo doing something that would be like an utmost offence to his community that they would have had no choice but to excommunicate him. Perhaps he did some shenanigans in the “overworld” that may have endangered the way of life in the community. Something violent and for the thrill.

Perhaps with Ross, when the caretakers and their families left the Church years ago for whatever reason, one of them may have secretly awoken him with the intent to look after and take care of the Church in the way that they wouldn’t be able to anymore. However Ross didn’t really know how to do what they had expected of him so he kept to himself up in the rafters, minding to his own things (whatever they may have been) and watching those who came in and out and the new pastors and priests who had came to adopt the Church. He learned a bit from went they spoke and prayed, but never really took to religion himself. Also he could have, like you wrote, made a game of memory of recurring visitors - always getting a little happy twinge when he recognized someone walk in, but also a bit disappointed when they left; wondering why they couldn’t stay longer.

He could never forget the faces of his original caretakers, though. He watched everyday as people came and went, scanning every face for any of them while trying to remain hopeful that they’ll one day come back. The new caretakers never spoke of what happened, never said enough that would give him what he desired to know - or at least they never spoke of it within earshot.

When Smith came along so many years later, he realized he needed to stop living in the past and move on. While losing his Church was an injurious event in itself, he knew it was necessary. I don’t think he’ll ever be able to entirely get over the ordeal, but he does his damnedest to push it out of his mind. Besides, he’s got his friends to watch over now.

Imagine for the sake of relaxation or getting away from the city, they rent a pontoon and go to a campground lake like a little over an hour away. Smith and Sips are the most visibly excited, one for the sheer sake of being able to drive a boat and the other to go swimming at a place where they could have privacy (because really, what pool could you possibly find in a city that would allow the kelpie to actually relax in without getting whistled at by a lifeguard?). Trott’s excited too, of course, he’s just too stubborn to show it until they get there. He’s in the same boat (haha) as Smith in regards to seclusion to swim. Ross, on the other hand, straight out disapproves and it takes a decent amount of coaxing and promises from the others that they wouldn’t let him drown if he decided to get in the water. He begrudgingly agrees a little while later. When they get there, Ross starts to have second thoughts when he actually sees the massive body of water and tries to backtrack back into the car - though Smith preemptively locked it.

Equally sorry that my reply took a couple days as well. Happy New Years though!
